The lowdown

Carbon is the big one for South and east Manchester. Seventeen indoor courts on Vaughan Street in West Gorton, a mix of doubles and singles courts plus a pickleball court, all laid on Mondo turf, the same surface used on the Premier Padel tour. It bills itself as the largest indoor padel club in the UK, and the courts, cafe, bar and lounge back that up. It's an eight-minute walk from Ashburys train station, with free on-site parking if you're driving from Chorlton or Didsbury.

It suits everyone from complete beginners to competitive players. There's a full coaching programme through Carbon Coaches and the M3 Academy, regular leagues, and sessions aimed at specific groups, over-50s socials and women's intro classes among them. Reviewers rate it as genuinely welcoming rather than cliquey, and with the bar and food on site it's the kind of place you can turn a game into a proper night out.
