The lowdown

Manchester Padel Club is set inside South Manchester Sports Club in Heald Green, over on the Stockport side, and it's a purpose-built setup rather than a couple of courts added to an old tennis club. Seven courts give it real range: four covered, one outdoor, and two smaller Touch Padel courts kept for coaching and technique work, which very few venues around here bother with. One of the covered courts doubles as a show court for classes and events.

This is a place built for actually learning the game. There's an academy staffed by international-level coaches, free racket hire if you turn up without kit, and junior coaching from age six on those smaller courts. Early word points to a friendly, low-ego feel rather than a hardcore competitive one, so improvers and first-timers fit in as easily as regular club players.

It's pay-and-play through Playtomic with no need to join: outdoor courts from £9 a head, or £36 for the whole court, and covered ones from £12 a head, or £48 for the court, with the Touch courts from £6 for half an hour. Membership is £100 a year if you play a lot, extending your advance booking window to 21 days and knocking 10% off. Parking is free and shared with the wider sports club.

The courts

Seven courts in total: four covered, one outdoor, and two smaller Touch Padel training courts used for coaching and technique sessions. One of the covered courts doubles as the main show court for classes and events. The surface type isn't confirmed.

Prices and booking

Outdoor courts are from £9 per person per hour, or £36 to book the whole court, and covered courts from £12 per person, or £48 for the whole court. The Touch and mini courts are from £6 for 30 minutes. Membership is £100 a year, giving 21 days' advance booking rather than 7, 10% off court bookings, and access to the fitness area when it opens. Booking is via Playtomic.

Do I need to be a member to play? No. Anyone can book and pay through the Playtomic app. Membership at £100 a year just extends how far in advance you can book and gives a 10% discount.
Do I need my own racket? No, rackets and balls are provided free of charge when you arrive.
Is there coaching for complete beginners?Yes. The club runs an academy with international-level coaches and group sessions for all levels, plus junior coaching from age 6 on the smaller Touch Padel courts.
